Gateways

Network gateways & couplers

A gateway brings field devices with another protocol into your PLC, for example CANopen, SAE J1939, PROFIBUS DP and PA, Modbus RTU or DeviceNet devices into PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT or Modbus TCP. On the network of the field devices the gateway usually takes the master role.

Gateways for one protocol pair

Helmholz PN/CAN gateways in two housings, SLIM and FLAT, that are functionally identical: choose the housing that fits your cabinet, then the variant by the role on the CAN bus.

DP/CAN coupler

DP/CAN coupler

PROFIBUS
CAN
CANopen

A DP slave on PROFIBUS and the CANopen master or a Layer 2 device on CAN. Despite the name it works as a gateway.

netLINK PROXY

netLINK PROXY

PROFINET
PROFIBUS

1703.430H. Plugs directly onto the PROFIBUS DP interface of one DP slave and connects it to PROFINET through its RJ45 socket.

mbGate DP

mbGate DP

PROFIBUS
Modbus

GCA-EN-024806. Integrates one PROFIBUS DP segment into a Modbus TCP control system via internal I/O mapping.

NETLink PRO Compact

NETLink PRO Compact

PROFIBUS

700-884-MPI21. Programming and diagnostic access to MPI and PROFIBUS stations over Ethernet, with a PG socket in the connector housing.

Multiprotocol gateways

The netTAP connects Real-Time Ethernet, fieldbus and serial protocols in many combinations, configured with the Hilscher gateway configuration software. For one device on the fieldbus or serial side, the netTAP 50 is enough: the master function for one slave is included. For a network of devices, choose the netTAP 100 with master licence.

Before you commission

What we check first on a gateway

  • Who is master on the field network? If the CANopen or PROFIBUS network already has a master, the gateway has to be a slave there: for CAN, choose the CANopen Slave variant instead of the Master.
  • The field bus still needs to be right. A gateway does not fix the physical layer: CAN needs a 120 Ω terminating resistor at both ends, PROFIBUS DP an active termination at both ends of each segment.
  • Number of devices. The netTAP 50 is master for one slave; the netTAP 100 is master for up to 125 PROFIBUS slaves or 126 CANopen nodes; a pnGate PA with two segments takes up to 32 PA devices, with four segments up to 64.

Which PN/CAN gateway variant do I need?

CANopen Master if your PLC controls the CANopen network, CANopen Slave if the network already has a master, Layer 2 for devices with their own protocol on CAN frames, and SAE J1939 for J1939 networks. SLIM (700-67x-PNC51) and FLAT (700-67x-PNC01) are functionally identical.

Can CAN devices work under a PROFIBUS master?

Yes, with the DP/CAN coupler. On PROFIBUS it is a DP slave at up to 12 Mbit/s; on CAN it runs at up to 1 Mbit/s as CANopen master (700-650-CAN01) or as a Layer 2 device (700-651-CAN01).

How do I add one PROFIBUS device to PROFINET?

Use the netLINK PROXY (1703.430H). It plugs directly onto the PROFIBUS DP interface of the DP slave and connects to PROFINET through its RJ45 socket. The netTAP 50 (1758.110) is an alternative on the DIN rail; for a complete PROFIBUS DP segment, use the netTAP 100 (1712.180).

How many PROFIBUS PA devices fit on one gateway?

A pnGate PA with two segments takes up to 32 PA devices, with four segments up to 64. The pnGate PB combines two PA segments with one PROFIBUS DP segment (RS485).

Can I connect PROFIBUS PA to Modbus TCP?

Yes, with the mbGate PA: two segments (GCA-EL-024802) for up to 32 devices or four segments (GCA-EL-024804) for up to 64. For PROFIBUS DP to Modbus TCP, use the mbGate DP (GCA-EN-024806).

Which gateway for Modbus RTU devices?

For one Modbus RTU or serial device, the netTAP 50 (1750.110) connects it to PROFINET, EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP. For a Modbus RTU network with several slaves, use the netTAP 100 (1712.100) with master licence; it also supports EtherCAT, Sercos and POWERLINK.

When do I need the netTAP master licence?

When the netTAP 100 or 151 has to be master on one side: order the master licence 8211.000 with the netTAP 100, or the netTAP 151 as 1722.122/+ML. The netTAP 50 never needs one; the master function for one slave is included.

My combination is not listed?

Choose both protocols in the selection tool on the gateways and couplers page. If no product appears, contact us with both protocols and the number of devices, and we will look at your application.
